Music Video Evaluation

For this assignment I chose a song to create a music video around, the song which I chose to make the video for was "Iris" by "The Goo Goo Dolls". My music video is a narrative music video as it tells a story.

My video starts off with the main character of the story; I used different angled shots to show the characters emotion and what he looks like, before the song started. This was used to get to know the character so we can see what he is feeling from right at the start; I tried to use a variety of close ups to show the characters face and introduce many different elements about the video such as the genre by what he is wearing and his attitude along with the storyline as there is an indication that something bad has happened. The different shots are also a way of showing the characters surroundings; as we can see the character is in a normal looking house instead of somewhere over the top which shows that he is just an ordinary person; which makes him appeal more to the audience as they can relate to him.

The character never actually moves out of place except when there is a flashback, the flashbacks are used as the main source of telling the story; which I think is The shots are squared out and they show that the character is concealed to a certain area in the house; the character is sitting in the light but around him he is surrounded by darkness; the light is to show that the character is in thought; the darkness is supposed to show the characters depression whereas the light shows that the character can escape the loneliness through his happy thoughts.

I think that overall my music video which I created came out well; I think this because from looking at it and comparing it with other music videos associated to this certain genre it uses many of the traditional elements; for example the way the dress style was displayed in my music video. I tried to make sure the dress code which relates to rock music was met in my video, I made sure that I was wearing dark make-up and dark clothes, which I think helped to bring out and emphasize the emotion of the song. Other techniques which I think I did well was the way I used the lighting in certain scenes; the way I used the lighting was by facing it in a way so that it would create shadows across my face and in some shots cut off half. The way I used this was effective because I think that the lighting really gave my music video a dark feel to it, and it helped emphasize the story that it being told.

With my music video I tried to do as many different shots as possible as I thought that it seemed more artistic, and I feel that it really brought out the emotion which I was trying to portray to tell a story. In the video I have used only people who are being filmed; I did this because it made the video seem like these were the only two people that existed and so it emphasized the loneliness when one of them is taken away.
